State Budget “Transparency” Web Sites Provide New Level Of Visibility Into Government Activities

$1.8 billion in summary spending data available from active sites

Reston, VA – July 16, 2008 –   According to a new report recently released by INPUT, the authority on government business, eleven states have implemented budget transparency Web sites and 24 more are considering implementing one. Not only do these sites provide opportunities for vendors to assist with implementation, the sites provide previously unavailable budget visibility to organizations interested in state budgeting activities.  For example, $1.8 billion in summary spending data is available from these active sites. Business intelligence vendors will want to incorporate these sites into the strategic decision-making toolkit of senior government officials.

“These are a great near-real-time tool vendors can use to identify key players and top IT purchases made statewide,” said Angie Ross, analyst for INPUT. “This will help them identify potential partners and key spending areas at the individual state level.  Right now they are attached to more primitive budgeting databases, but they could eventually make use of high-level data from enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems.”

INPUT expects this first generation of transparency Web sites to be built on the cheap, using mostly internal development resources.  However, as performance management gains steam across the nation, these sites will integrate into larger governmental transparency sites that governors and legislators use to benchmark outcomes and return on investment.

These findings and others were released in an INPUT Industry Insight Report, “State ‘Transparency’ Websites Provide Immediate Insights and Long-Term Opportunities for Vendors.” More details are available at http://www.input.com/corp/library/detail.cfm?ItemID=5846&cmp=OTC-mrtransparency071608.
