Tyree Varnado
Acting Commissioner,
Federal Acquisition Service
Tyree Varnado was designated Acting Commissioner as well as Deputy Commissioner for the U.S. General Services Administration’s Federal Acquisition Service (FAS) effective September 21, 2008. In this capacity, he leads the delivery of approximately $48 billion of best-value services, products and solutions to federal customers that increase overall government effectiveness and efficiency.
Prior to this, Tyree served as the Assistant Regional Administrator for Federal Acquisition Service within the Greater Southwest Region. In this capacity he oversaw the daily operations of a diverse organization which included Acquisition Operations, Fleet Management, Network Services, Assisted Acquisition Services, Property Management, and Customer Accounts and Research divisions. He was responsible for over 400 employees within an eleven-state region and an annual operating budget of over $50 million.
With over 35 years of Federal Government experience, Tyree began his career as an auditor with the U.S. Department of Agriculture before joining the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) in 1973. From 1973 to 1995, Tyree served in various capacities at the GSA National Finance Center in Kansas City, MO including Chief, Accounts Receivable Branch, Chief, External Services Division, and Chief, National Payroll Center. Prior to his arrival in Fort Worth, Tyree served from 1996 to 2002 as the Assistant Regional Administrator (ARA) for Federal Supply Service (FSS), Heartland Region in Kansas City. He also served in temporary detail positions as the Assistant Commissioner for the Fleet and Automotive business line in 1999 and as ARA for FSS in the Northeast and Caribbean Region in 2001.
Tyree has actively participated on many councils, committees, and leadership teams during his tenure at the agency. Some of these include the regional Acquisition Council, Marketing Council, and Financial Council. He chaired the nationwide FSS Management Council from 2001 to 2003. Additionally, he served as the chairperson for the nationwide, multi-agency National Response Plan committee.
Tyree has received numerous performance awards including the prestigious GSA Meritorious Service Award in 2002. He is also a recent recipient of the Greater Southwest Region's GSA Excellence award for his outstanding leadership.Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2008
